Tree Health Survey

Who Has a Tree Health Survey?

A Tree Health Survey is for three groups of people; the keen gardener who is really interested in getting the best from their garden, the commercial client who is responsible for Health and Safety for a property and the homeowner who is concerned a neighbour is using weed killer on their plants and trees.

Why do They Require a Tree Health Survey?

  1. The keen gardener who wants to make sure their tree is healthy and that there are no issues that need to be dealt with promptly to ensure the overall health of the tree, ensuring it will look fantastic for years and even decades to come.
  2. Landowner or property manager. Their concern is from a Health and Safety viewpoint. They want to know that there is no chance of a branch coming off a tree or even the whole tree blowing over and either damaging property or injuring a person!
  3. Concerned homeowner, who has seen their hedge, trees or other plants affected by some sort of weed killer. This concerns them greatly and they would like some sort of definitive proof, so that this can be dealt with. Some clients are happy to get the neighbour to stop, others require reports for their solicitor, so they can sue their neighbour for criminal damage and trespass.

What is included in a Tree Health Survey?

We will make the survey and report bespoke to the requirements of each type of client depending on their needs.

For the keen gardener, the survey usually involves them walking around with one of our expert arboriculturists talking about their trees and the arboricultural surveyor giving advice as they walk around the garden. We would then write up a report based on what was seen giving recommendations for the client. This is typically very interactive and well suited for those who are very proud of their garden and want an expert’s opinion.

For property managers and landowners responsible for Health and Safety, the aim of the survey is to make sure that all the trees are “safe.” This is a Health and Safety requirement and there have been a number of legal cases where the judge has recommended that this type of survey must be carried out every two years to remain compliant.

The survey looks typically at every tree on the property however we only report on the trees that have issues. This includes looking for physical damage, decay, dead branches or trees, bacterial infections along with any fungal growth which is a sure sign of decay within the tree.

The objective of this survey is to keep members of the public and employees that are on site or passing below your trees as safe as possible. If the worst does happen and a branch does drop off and kill someone, our reports will demonstrate that you took your Health and Safety requirements very seriously and you did all you could to mitigate any foreseeable risk with regards to the trees on site.

Phytophthora Testing in Birmingham

Additional Tests

If required we can quote and carry out a number of other tests to give us additional information, these include;

Testing for PhytophthoraPhytophthora is fungus-like and is often called water mould. It can cause massive damage to plants, often killing them. It can be identified by wilted leaves, downy mildew and rotting roots, as well as other symptoms. We can test for this and once you know you have Phytophthora this then can be treated.

Testing for decay and hollow sections within a trunk: The PiCus Sonic Tomograph uses sound waves, creating a 2-D image to see if there is any decay in the centre of the tree without the need for invasive drilling. This is ideal if you want to keep the tree but want to make sure it is safe.

Resistance Testing: Using a IML Power Drill we are able to clearly identify if there is decay within a tree, utility poles and even children’s park equipment.
