Phytophthora Testing

What is Phytophthora?

Phytophthora is one of the most common causes of root and stem base decay, second only to honey fungus. This microscopic, fungus-like organism affects a wide range of trees and shrubs, as well as occasionally being seen in perennials, bedding plants and bulbs.

The Phytophthora organism is primarily found within heavy or waterlogged soils and can survive in the soil for many years without a host plant. It can be spread through the movement of infected plant material, contaminated soil, water and even tools, and presents similar symptoms to those presented by waterlogging. It can also be spread by rainwater and airborne spores.
