Japanese Knotweed has been listed in the top 100 most invasive plants in the world. Originally from Japan and brought over to the UK due to it’s attractive flowers, Japanese knotweed grows rapidly and can quickly dominate natural environments, growing up to 10cm per day during growing season. Japanese knotweed is also notorious for growing through the structure of buildings, pipes, drains and cavity walls meaning that it has a high potential for causing damage. Although it is not illegal to have Japanese knotweed on your property, it is the legal responsibility of the land owner to prevent the plant from spreading into the wild and on to neighbouring properties.
As a result of it’s invasive tendencies and it’s propensity to cause damage to buildings and the environment, having Japanese knotweed on a property can result in a devaluation of between 5 – 15%
