Bird Surveys

What are Bird Surveys?

The purpose of a bird survey is to investigate how wintering birds benefit from using Agri-environment scheme (AES) options in winter. These surveys help us to understand why the majority of breeding farmland bird are still in decline and what we can do to prevent further decrease.

What is an Agri-Environment Scheme?

Agri-environment schemes (AES) in England enable farmers and land managers to work in ways that support biodiversity. These schemes have been designed to benefit farmland birds by providing winter food resources, but until now there has been no national-scale monitoring of the effects of (AES) management on birds in winter.

Wintering Bird Surveys:

Wintering bird surveys are most often required for habitats that support populations of migratory species during the winter. However, these can also be carried out in other areas such as a major infrastructure scheme. In this case a full assessment of the impact upon birds would be required.

Wintering bird surveys are carried out from November until the end of February. Typically, the area will be divided up into smaller areas and from each of these areas the birds are counted on several occasions at different intervals throughout the winter period.
