What is a Preliminary Ecology Appraisal in Wales?

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), is also known as an extended phase 1 habitat survey. A Preliminary Ecology Appraisal in Wales is often carried out as part of the planning process and is the initial ecology assessment that is requested to identify and analyses the presence of wildlife on a specific site. This is usually carried out in the beginning stages of a project. They will be carried out prior to any ecological features being disturbed as a result of the development. Because the preliminary ecology appraisal in Wales is the first survey that will be carried out as part of the ecology assessment process it will index everything of biodiversity value on site. The aim of this is to confirm the presence and absence of ecological features on site. If no species or ecological value is identified it therefore eliminates any ecological constraints and removes the need for further surveys to be carried out.

Why would I need a Preliminary Ecology Appraisal in Wales?

You may require a preliminary ecological appraisal in Wales to assist with your planning application process. In the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and the ODPM Circular 06/05 it states that during the decision to grant or deny planning permission, that officers need to take into consideration the ecological enhancement and preservation of protected species.

Therefore, by having a comprehensive report carried out by qualified ecological surveyor you will be able to satisfy the local planning authority by outlining any risks to notable species and providing recommendations of amendments that can be made to reduce the disturbance of the project on the surrounding wildlife.

Therefore, a lot of our clients request that these surveys are completed at the same time as the Phase 1 Extended Ecology Survey, keeping the price as cost effective as possible. These surveys can be completed independently, however please note that if the ecologist has to visit the site again in order to conduct the assessment it would be at an additional cost.
